PURPOSE: Collaboration Marketplace (purpose)
CONTEXT: This purpose is the driver for the Ledger Application, and is developed from the New Theory of the Firm pattern.
Build a marketplace where working together around purpose is rewarding, dynamic and resilient. A specific social platform which supports skilled persons to come together in groups to work together around (any) purpose.
Large numbers of skilled persons are concerned to work for purposes that motivate them, but are forced to either choose some corporate entity to take employment with, or take their chances forming groupings without much useful infrastructure.
Equally, there are large numbers of purpose-led projects lacking capacity to select appropriate teams to take their ideas forward - and are thus reliant either on informal processes, commercial freelance platforms, or risky selection of some corporate offer.
It is proposed that an appropriately designed platform could allow individuals to find compatible co-workers for collaboration, and over time develop strong working groups at human scale, which can be highly effective in supporting the development of purpose-led projects
The potential of this approach is exemplified by the success and viability of the Enspiral group. Although Enspiral have explicitly and carefully made much information about their working practices public, there have nevertheless been no equivalent successes elsewhere.
It is considered that a group looking at Enspiral from the outside, and based in a different cultural milieu has the potential to develop a framwework which can support experimentation and development around the Enspiral social patterns processes and others in the service of better productivity of those with skills to contribute, increased capacity of the FOSS sector, and better service to purpose-led projects.
Imagine:
- a version of https://www.freelancer.com/ that operates via 'crews', rather than individuals (lower risk, higher productivity and accountability, better for crew members too).
- where jobs that require teams are posted,
- where significant specification building (Pattern Language underpinnings), contractual, legal and arbitration tools / support / services are in place (costing real money),
- where individuals can post themselves, but not bid for work directly - instead are fostered by 'matchmakers' into scratch teams to do simpler, shorter contracts - lower risk - good opportunities to get to know others.
- where over time, crews can form, build brand, reputation, collaborate with other crews to go for bigger projects (crews of crews form and reform over time...).
- All internally conditioned on the basis of an internal, mutual credit type currency (smart contracts etc all potentially in the mix).
- Owned as a mutli-stakeholder org (a la Chris Cook Nondominium) by members who can come from all interested groups (with investors as one member class, entitled to returns, but not dominance or eternal rent)
- Versions in many domains - coding, yes, but also film-making, construction, niche industries...
Here's an example of something that has collaboration tools and could leverage this work - FluxDoc. This runs on Odoo - open source business software.
CONTRIBUTORY PATTERNS/PURPOSES:
Viable purposes to not come from thin air, or even one mind - they need to be developed through conversation and argument. Propositions/Hypotheses are used to seed these conversations, on the basis of which Purpose Development work can be undertaken.
